Anita Sarkeesian is something of a hero in the feminist gaming community. In 2012, she asked for $6,000 to do a video series exploring five common and recurring stereotypes of female characters in video games. She received $158,922. The video we’ve linked to above is the first video in the series talking about the “Damsel in Distress” trope. Here’s a link to the entire series over at feminist frequency.
The internet has not been kind to Sarkeesian since her successful campaign. Check her Wikipedia page to see the kind of harassment she received.
Sarkeesian is in the spotlight again. Some have launched a kickstarter-esque campaign to produce a documentary called The Sarkeesian Effect. It’s sparked a new wave of harassment for Sarkeesian and even Joss Whedon has weighed in defending her.
Check out her project, and let us know what you think. What do you think about the portrayal of women in video games? Are social justice warriors over-reacting, or might there be some potential harm here.
